I commute by bike from Sellwood to downtown via Springwater trail. here's my opinion:
biking makes sense. you get exercise, you avoid SITTING in a metal and plastic pod that emits C02 and burns fuel, YOU provide the energy, and it is very efficient, you avoid parking problems, you SEE more on a bike. you feel better when you get to work and arrive home, and are therefore more pleasant person to be around ...
for inspiration, i encourage you to visit amsterdam or copenhagen, and witness for yourself large communities of prosperous people benefiting from using bicycle as primary transportation.
it just makes sense, pretty much every way you slice it.
