International Corporations (YP Discussion Group)
The World Affairs Council, Young Professionals invite you to our fortnightly discussion group:Wednesday, 18 August 2010 | 7:00 p.m.

The BP oil spill and the Australian mining tax have put the role of international corporations in the spotlight. When corporations transcend national regulatory boundaries, what is the best method to prevent abuses? How do we reconcile the interests of companies that might clash with local interests? Has this issue been blown out of proportion? Are international corporations the bogeyman of the International Left?

It seems int'l corporate responsibility is a global issue. The biggest challenge remains succinctly put by Plato. Who will guard the guardians? Are there any philosophers left, who feel any obligation to the greed of otherwise unrestricted abuse of fellow men & women? The League of Nations failed & now the UN is marginally better. The primary rationale for nations' international activities appear to be consistently self centered, join cliques or cabales, depending on your bias, for individual national or tribal gain. Few programs, e.g. WHO may be the exception to prove the rule.
