President Obama's current trip to India featured the surprise announcement of US support for a permanent Indian presence on the UN Security Council. Seen in the context of China's growing assertiveness, India is being groomed to serve as a counter to emerging China. Is this a case of the US supporting a fellow democracy as it comes into its own, or is our interest in the subcontinent related solely to unease about China? How will China react to the increasingly friendly US-India relationship?
